Our rep for Marimekko textiles came into the office today to show us some new stuff and I’ve fallen head over heels for cows (yes, cows.) Orange background, lime green background, fuchsia pink background? All fan-fucking-tastic. I def need a wall of this somewhere…

Not every fabulous (or not so much) thing we find can come home with us. Here is (another) sampling of things we did not buy…
This handsome cowboy is downright, well, um, terrifying.

handsome cowboy.
Lemonade? Darling set but the price just wasn’t right.

These two funky, striped side/coffee tables (?) on wheels were signed Anne Herbert and would have come home with me if they didn’t have a price tag of $195.

Pastel paintings perhaps?

Hat boxes (again!) Lots of them too.

valentine’s day has come and gone and left me with red roses, jewelry from Etsy (from an old favorite Kate Szabone http://etsy.me/hF9yr4 and a new fave Be Jeweled By Nikki http://etsy.me/h0Pot8) and the best boyfriend a girl could ask for. and what did i get for my fabulous boy? a heartfelt, albeit quickly put together, card professing my love to my one and only. (he caught me off guard! we have a rule not to do gifts on valentines…) but it got me thinking about how with very little supplies, a unique card can be made and i thought i would pass on the how-to to other unprepared lovebirds. here it goes…
supplies: cardstock, paper, glue, scissors, printer, hole puncher, ribbon, artistic inspiration.
instructions:
1. find images online of interesting photographs and subjects. look for figures or shapes that can easily be cut out. i was inspired by the photographs of Robert Frank and used all black & white photos which i printed on a vanilla paper.
2. print out images and cut out the various shapes or figures. i cut out a cowboy, a couple sitting on a bench and vintage cars & picnic goers.
3. use a cut down and folded piece of cardstock as your main support. i used white cardstock but a bright color works really well too.
4. glue the cut out images in an interesting configuration. sometimes just one striking figure floating on a blank background can be all you need.
5. write your love note/poem/haiku inside.
6. make a simple envelope by folding and gluing the edges of a folded piece of paper. punch a hole through the envelope and attach a ribbon to add a little decoration.
voila! insta-card! although i recommend just being better prepared next valentines…

PS. And if you were prepared enough to figure out the perfect gift but had no time for the perfect gift wrap, a little white copy paper and a single print out of a cut out figure does the trick very nicely…

After
years of seeing beautiful headboards in magazines, blogs and other people’s homes I decided enough was enough and I too needed a beautiful tufted headboard. Our house being very small and our bed being pushed up against windows meant that most of the headboards I was finding in thrift stores were simply not going to work. So, after researching several do-it-yourself sites, I found a very easy set of instructions from BeJane.com. It took about an hour to build (not including supplies shopping) and I had most of the tools needed already on hand.
Link for full instructions: http://www.bejane.com/headboard
Step One:
Cut down the plywood and foam core to correct size/shape for your bed. Since I was using a simple rectangular shape I was able to have Home Depot cut down the wood for me. Use spray adhesive to glue the foam core to the upper portion of the plywood.

Step 1.
Step Two:
Wrap the batting around the front of the headboard and staple edges to back. Staple down batting under bottom edge of foam core.

Step 2.

Step 2. Detail
Step Three:
Wrap the fabric over the batting (may need to iron out wrinkles first.) and staple edges to back. Pay particular attention around the corners, as you may need to fold them so they don’t pucker.

Step 3.
Step Four:
Measure out spacing for buttons and staple down fabric and foam core where you want the buttons to go. Hot glue gun the buttons into place.

Step 4.

Step 4. Detail
Step Five:
Be Jane’s instructions explained how to install brackets for mounting the headboard on the wall. Since our wall had low windows we opted not to anchor the headboard but instead just pushed our bed up to the headboard which holds it in place perfectly.
